Clinics: (for Children & Youth Under 18yrs)

Elgin St. Thomas Public Health provides free preventive dental hygiene services at 3 clinic locations to help you access screening, dental hygiene treatment, oral hygiene education and possible referral to a dentist through our programs "Healthy Smiles Ontario" and "CINOT (Children In Need Of Treatment)".
Treatment may include (this varies according to each individual): cleaning (dental scaling), selective polish, fluoride treatments, dental sealants and oral hygiene instruction. All clinics are for eligible children and youth under 18 years and by appointment only.

The Benefits of Preventive Dental Treatment:

  • Preventive treatment means regular check-ups and cleanings. Taking care of your teeth may prevent the need for any major treatment or dental problems.
  • Even with regular brushing and flossing, plaque bacteria still accumulate along the gum line and in hard-to-reach places. Hardened plaque becomes tartar, which can cause the gums to separate from the teeth, and develop bacteria-filled pockets. Because tartar can ultimately cause tooth loss, a dental hygienist must remove the tartar before any permanent damage is made.
  • Cavities are holes on the surface of the tooth caused by bacteria, acids, plaque and tartar. Cavities are the most common chronic disease among children, and usually occur as a result of poor dental hygiene. Dental caries are usually painless at first, but they may become painful if they spread to the nerve or root of a tooth. Left untreated, cavities can progress to a tooth abscess, which is a painful and potentially serious condition.
